| Abstract: | For landing without visual aids, judgment of slant angle from texture gradients may be the primary strategy used by pilots to maintain a constant angle of descent toward a runway aimpoint. A mathematical analysis was undertaken to assess whether 1 or more of the available texture gradients have the properties required to support this strategy. The analysis revealed that texture gradients in themselves could not be useful. A relative gradient proportionalized against size of texture elements could, however, support descent-path control. Although not mathematically invariant, the departures from invariance of these relative gradients are too small to be functionally significant. In addition, relative gradients are sensitive to minimum functionally significant changes in angle of descent, whereas absolute gradients are not.
