Abstract: The author discusses how the treatment of patients with medically unexplained symptoms (MUS) can have an impact on the burden of illness and the cost of health care services. MUS is defined by the author as signs of distress or malfunction that can not be accounted for by a physical disorder. A list of common manifestations of MUS in different specialties including cardiology, neurology and gastroenterology is presented.
