Abstract: The article offers author's views on a research study published within the issue which investigated the role of the axons in myelin maintenance. The researchers have found that preservation of the myelin sheath requires neuronal expression of the prion protein. The researchers have identified an axonal protein that contributes to the maintenance of myelin, which according to the author, a substantial step forward in the understanding of the potential molecular pathogenesis of these neuropathies.
