Abstract: An essay is presented on the community engagement efforts of research universities in the U.S. It overviews the different types of community engagement as outlined by the education policy organization the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, describes the boundary-spanning theory, and discusses educational collaboration between colleges, businesses, and community members. Other topics include quantitative research methods, educational partnerships, and institutional assessments.
