Abstract: In this article the authors discuss recommendations made by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), in collaboration with the U.S. Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI), to address how the prescribed course structure in medical schools impedes educational innovation. The authors, who are themselves HHMI professors, note their shared goal of promoting science excellence through the development of novel approaches to science teaching, curriculum design, and mentoring.
