Title: Loss of malarial susceptibility to artemisinin in Thailand.
Authors: Uhlemann, Anne-Catrin, Fidock, David A.
Source: Lancet. 5/26/2012, Vol. 379 Issue 9830, p1928-1930. 3p.
Subjects: Medical research, Artemisinin, Malaria treatment, Aung Pyae Phyo, Germ cells, Genetic determinism
Abstract: The authors discuss aspects of the results of the study by Aung Pyae Phyo and colleagues which suggests that reduced susceptibility to artemisinin seems to be emerging in Thailand. They argue that artemisinins are effective against early-stage gametocytes and the symptomatic asexual blood stages. They contend that the study underscores the importance of definition of genetic determinants in monitoring the spread of resistance.
