Abstract: The article discusses critical issues and current advances in using measures of hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenocortical (HPA) activity, particularly cristol, in developmental studies of emotion. It also discusses advances in assessing stress reactivity of HPA axis, advances in quantifying the cristol stress response, and neuroimaging studies of the HPA axis and emotion. It was concluded that measuring cortisol does not provide a simple read-out of child and adolescent emotional states.
