| Abstract: | The goal setting behavior of adult asthmatic patients has been previously characterized as tending to show high goal level setting and rigid persistence in attaining these goals. While the behavior of asthmatic children has been previously investigated and observations relevant to goal setting behavior has been described, no explicit experimental investigation of goal setting behavior of asthmatic children has been reported. This was undertaken in the present study. Previous investigators have reported on the particular significance of the interrelationships between the mother and the asthmatic child, pointing to the overprotection of the child by the mother, the overambition of the mother for her child and the overdependence of the child upon the mother, with immaturity and lack of self-confidence in the reaction of the asthmatic child in most situations. Goal setting behavior has been extensively investigated through the use of level-of-aspiration tasks. To summarize, the experimental mothers had made higher goal discrepancy scores for their children than the control mothers, the differences being reliable. The control mothers showed low positive to low negative goal discrepancy scores, and the experimental mothers showed high positive discrepancy scores in most cases. |
