Abstract:	Current theories emphasize the role of infantile experience in the development of personality and behavior. This article reports a study of the effects of different infantile experiences with and without an unavoidable shock as measured by later avoidance learning in the rat. The results of this study reveal significant differences in behavior among the various groups as a function of treatment in infancy. It is hoped that the three major conditions of this experiment may be represented one day as three points along a single dimension of amount or intensity of stimulation, with a condition of minimal or insufficient stimulation at one end and a condition of excessive traumatic stimulation at the other. However, the present experiment does not justify such a presentation. It is necessary for the present to consider separately the comparison of the groups whose treatment differed only in the dimension of handling (No-Handling vs No-Shock), and that of the groups differing only in the traumatic stimulus dimension (No-Shock vs Shock).
