Abstract: This article presents five types of creative mathematician, the types being based on the subjects' self- descriptions of their professional interests and research styles. Personality and family background correlates of these types are also reported. The sample for the study comprises 34 creative subjects selected by a nomination procedure. They represent a sample of creative workers within the various fields of mathematics The average age is 39. Twelve subjects were tested in person by one of the authors at the Institute of Advanced Study at Princeton. The other subjects received packets of tests by mail. Descriptions of parents from the life history questionnaire were rated on several variables by two raters unconnected with the study. Interrater reliabilities ranged between .73 and 86. Correlations were computed between the individual subjects treated as variables and the oblique cluster domains characteristic of each of the types. These correlations were standardized and used as type scores.
