| Abstract: | Numerous investigations in recent years may be subsumed under the general topic of attitude change. Variables which affect attitude change involve situational factors, the communicator, and communication content. Furthermore, it has been suggested that if other variables are held constant, certain predispositional factors within the individual may determine whether attempted influence will result in the acceptance of that influence. Such predispositional characteristics have often been classed under the general term persuasibility factor. Evidence for a trait of persuasibility has been obtained in studies which have presented a variety of opportunities for influence to take place and which have, at the same time, demonstrated that the same individuals tend to accept influence in a variety of situations. For example, with several different topics and types of appeals, tried to persuade individuals first in one direction and then in the opposite direction. Results showed that the same subjects tended to change their opinions on all issues, and furthermore, changed in the directions of both sets of communications even though the sets contained opposing views. |
