| Abstract: | The article focuses on visual interaction and performance of process and reactive schizophrenics as a function of examiner's sex. In previous research concerning the premorbid histories of schizophrenics, it has been noted that process schizophrenics that is those with poor premorbid histories have had a greater number of negative interactions with their mothers than with their fathers. The reverse has tended to be true of reactives, or those schizophrenics with good premorbid histories. Process schizophrenics have been found to have greater difficulty in discrimination tasks when the stimulus figure was that of a scolding mother, whereas reactive schizophrenics have shown comparable difficulty with paternal censure stimuli. In an investigation with the actual parents of process and reactive patients, researcher A. Farina found that mothers of the former appeared more domineering and less yielding than their spouses, whereas parents of reactives exhibited the opposite pattern, fathers seeming to be more domineering than their equivalents in families without schizophrenic children. |
