| Abstract: | The study presented in the article was concerned with the mediating effects of tolerance for ambiguity upon the arousal and reduction of cognitive dissonance. Several writers have discussed various personality variables that may be associated with differences in the tolerance for cognitive inconsistencies. Tolerance for ambiguity, however has received a surprising lack of attention as a possible determinant of differential reactions to an inconsistent situation. Intolerance for ambiguity may be viewed as a general tendency to perceive ambiguous material or situations as threatening. Tolerance for ambiguity implies that contact with an ambiguous situation is not overly threatening and may even be valued A.P. MacDonald maintains that persons high in ambiguity tolerance may seek out and enjoy ambiguity and excel in the performance of ambiguous tasks a researcher defined an ambiguous situation as one characterized by novelty, complexity or insolubility. The literature concerning effort justification has consistently supported the dissonance predictions. |
