Abstract: The article discusses the classification of bipolar disorder as an endocrine condition. It states that bipolar disorder was placed by the World Health Organisation at the top ten causes of disability due to its functional impairment and increased medical mortality and morbidity. It says that the studies conducted in the pre-antipsychotic era have shown that bipolar patients have a disturbed regulation in the homeostasis of glucose metabolism even before the use of psychotropic medication.
