Abstract: The authors comment on two studies which compared a different type of intraoperative radiotherapy with external whole-breast irradiation. They argue that reducing either the number of fractions or the irradiated volume, with or withoutshortening overall treatment time will improve the acceptability of external radiotheraphy. They added that the studies have shown that operative radiotherapy during breast-conserving surgery is an alternative to postoperative fractionated irradiation.
