| Abstract: | A 58-year-old woman was referred by her general practitioner, in December 1999, with a three-month history of rapidly progressing symmetrical contraction of the fingers of both hands, which began suddenly with pain and difficulty in holding objects. She had a long history of mild Raynaud's syndrome, a family history of colon cancer, and reported a recent weight loss of several kilograms. Blood glucose, anti-nuclear antibodies, extractable nuclear antibodies, rheumatoid factor, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, Borrelia serology, and plain radiographs and magnetic resonance images of both hands were negative or normal. Because of the unusual features, sudden onset, and rapid progression, she was screened for malignant disease. Pelvic magnetic resonance imaging showed bilateral complex ovarian cysts and a small amount of ascites. She had a total abdominal hysterectomy, bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, and omentectomy. After removal of her ovarian cancer, the skin changes on her hands stopped progressing but have not resolved. The clinico-pathological features are most compatible with palmar fibromatosis. |
