| Abstract: | The article presents the results of a March 1995 study on the attitudes of 186 Mississippi social workers toward poverty and the poor. Several factors motivated the investigation described herein. Foremost was the desire to establish a baseline measure for Mississippi social workers' attitudes toward poverty. The 1994 national election results, coupled with the retainment of Republican congressional power in 1996, signaled a radical shift in public policy toward the conservative right. This national shift, while significant in and of itself, was especially significant in Mississippi, an already conservative state with policy that can seem hostile toward the poor and social welfare. By legitimizing the state's conservative social policy, the national shift may significantly influence not only social workers' political orientations, but their personal attitudes toward the poor and the manner in which they deliver services to impoverished clients. Social workers who previously maintained secretive, unsympathetic attitudes toward the poor might now become more overt in expressing personal biases. |
