Abstract: This article focuses on the Primeros Pasos mentorship program, developed by Elizabeth Stringer-Nunley, the English-learner lead in the rural Galax School District in Virginia, to support Hispanic English learners at risk of dropping out. The program pairs Hispanic college students from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) with local high school students to provide academic guidance, emotional support, and college readiness. Since its launch in 2023, Primeros Pasos has contributed to a significant reduction in the district’s English learner dropout rate, from 29% to 7%. The program emphasizes culturally relevant mentorship, helping students visualize postsecondary opportunities and fostering stronger school engagement. Stringer-Nunley’s leadership and deep community ties have been central to the program’s success and ongoing impact. [Extracted from the article]
