Abstract: The author reflects on mathematics tests in U.S. public schools. He discusses the development of the Common Core State Standards, a set of U.S. educational standards, and their impact on mathematics education and the alignment of assessments. In addition, he suggests that poor tests have been designed due to a lack of experience, an inadequate decision making system, and concerns over the costs of testing systems.
