Abstract: The article discusses the closure of academic programs at U.S. universities and colleges and the dismissal of tenured faculty in an effort to offer guidance to university administration on using financial exigency as a reason for taking these steps. Topics include the policy regarding financial exigency in the American Association of University Professors' (AAUP) Recommended Institutional Regulations on Academic Freedom and Tenure, as well as policies on university budgets and faculty salaries.
