Abstract (English): The objective of the present essay is analyzing the growing diversity of family structures and its effect upon parenting practices, from their relation with the sociocultural environment, with particular focus upon the tendencies in the Mexican context. First, an approach to the concept of culture that distinguishes between the cognitive and behavioral dimension is presented, which is reflected in the practices generated by the members of the family group, as well as the beliefs associated to the family. Diversification is examined with regard to the existence of multiple arrangements and organization forms of contemporary families, and the flexibility of the mothers', fathers' and children's roles in the two-parent nuclear family. Subsequently, the views on the consequences of family plurality for childrearing are analyzed, and results of recent studies on this topic are reviewed. It is concluded that the complexity and heterogeneity of families in contemporary society in general, and also in the particular case of Mexico, have increased, which implies the necessity of doing more research and of revising public policies oriented towards the family. Abstract (Spanish): El presente ensayo tiene como objetivo analizar la creciente diversidad de las estructuras familiares, así como su efecto en las prácticas de crianza de los hijos, desde su relación con el entorno sociocultural, con particular énfasis en las tendencias que se presentan en México. Se parte de una aproximación al concepto de cultura que distingue entre sus dimensiones cognitiva y conductual, las cuales se reflejan en las prácticas que se generan en los miembros del grupo familiar y en las creencias asociadas con la familia. Se examina la diversificación en cuanto a la existencia de múltiples arreglos y estructuras de las familias contemporáneas, así como la flexibilización de los roles de madres, padres e hijos en la familia nuclear biparental. Posteriormente, se analizan las posturas sobre las consecuencias de la pluralidad familiar para la crianza de los hijos, revisando resultados de estudios recientes sobre este tópico. Se concluye que han incrementado la complejidad y la heterogeneidad de las familias en las sociedades occidentales en general, y en el caso de México en particular, lo que conlleva la necesidad de realizar más investigaciones y de revisar las políticas públicas dirigidas a la familia.
