Abstract: This paper is a result of ethnographic research about talking and associative life in public markets in south-east Mexico. The paper proposes to revise some aspects of the social psychological, linguistic and anthropological theories about passion, and especially envy, based on a constructionist and interpretative perspective. The paper explores some notions of metaphoric and narrative analysis, the possibilities of these strategies for developing cultural analysis of interaction situations in the ordinary life of these urban institutions, its actors and emotions involved including those of the analyst.
