Abstract: In this paper the author discusses some ideas concerning the study of contemporary ethnic phenomena. The starting point is that ethnicity is an unwanted product of nation formation, a kind of "illegitimate son" given by the "sacralization" of one ethnic ascription over other possible ones. But the formation of the nation as an ideological base of the state is a historic process which is parallel with the formation of a class society. To be able to understand all of the possible different ways in which ethnic groups relate to each other, we should look at it as crossing, hiding or amplifying class relations. And, last, to know about interethnic relationships in a given time and space, it is necessary to understand it as a historical process. To discuss these issues the author uses the cases of the Jews in United States, the Indians in Latin America and the Catalans in Spain. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]
