Abstract (English): In the History of Fashion, the episode named as "The Great Male Renunciation" explains the moment in which man stops conceiving his clothing under criteria of exhibitionism, ornamentation and search for beauty, and he is constructed in contrast to the aesthetic conception of women. As a consequence, he will be subsumed in a neutral, essential and timeless appearance to which he will be faithful until the mid-twentieth century. The basis of this episode must be sought in the political, economic and social changes that will be derived from the Glorious Revolution to the French Revolution. Our hypothesis is based on the fact that this historical period will lead, in turn, to a rethinking of the gender stereotypes in force during the Old Regime, both male and female, as an essential basis for the construction of the new order, and that fashion, aesthetics and ethics will be used for that purpose.
