Abstract: This article is a rereading of Emilio Bacardí's memoir of his exile and imprisonment in the North African islands of Chafarinas as an example of prison poetics. It explores Bacardi's text as a personal testimony as well as a denunciation of human rights violations. It also considers the text as a transnational, historical and political document that traces the particular experiences of Cuban prisoners during the culminating years of the Cuban wars against Spain and the transition toward a new administrative and political order on the island. This article also offers a reading of De Cuba a Chafarinas within the literary production of this period, namely diaries of the War of Independence or diarios de campaña. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
