Abstract (English): International Humanitarian Law (IHL) strives to protect those affected by armed conflicts and limit means and methods of warfare. However, violations of IHL persist, and people often remain inadequately protected. The article traces IHL's historical evolution from its early days to the universal ratification of the Geneva Conventions, emphasizing that the framework itself is not flawed. Instead, the lack of political will to comply with IHL in good faith is the primary cause of these violations. The article argues that compliance in good faith with IHL is essential to preserve its protective nature and demonstrate its relevance. Examples of compliance with IHL illustrate how IHL can protect persons affected by armed conflicts and its potential to contribute to peace. The conclusion underscores that the persistent relevance of IHL hinges on states' commitment to uphold and enforce its principles, asserting that genuine political will is crucial for mitigating the impact of armed conflicts and fostering sustainable peace. Abstract (Spanish): El Derecho Internacional Humanitario (DIH) tiene como objetivo proteger a las personas afectadas por los conflictos armados y limitar los métodos y medios de guerra. Sin embargo, las violaciones del DIH persisten y las personas a menudo no reciben la protección adecuada. El artículo explora la evolución histórica del DIH desde sus inicios hasta la ratificación universal de los Convenios de Ginebra, enfatizando que el marco en sí es sólido. Sin embargo, la falta de voluntad política para cumplir el DIH de buena fe es la causa principal de estas violaciones. El artículo sostiene que el cumplimiento de buena fe del DIH es esencial para preservar su carácter protector y demostrar su relevancia. Los ejemplos de cumplimiento del DIH ilustran cómo el DIH puede proteger a las personas afectadas por conflictos armados y su potencial para contribuir a la paz. La conclusión subraya que la relevancia duradera del DIH depende del compromiso de los Estados de defender y hacer cumplir sus principios, afirmando que una voluntad política genuina es crucial para mitigar el impacto de los conflictos armados y fomentar una paz sostenible.
