| Abstract (English): | The present work constitutes an effort to think about the role of the popular neighborhood space in the configuration of the cultural identities of its inhabitants. With this purpose in mind, we adopted a methodological design with a qualitative approach and a descriptive-comparative scope, since the data analyzed here correspond to two popular neighborhoods in the city of Guayaquil, Ecuador. This article emerges from a two-year research experience, and a total of 16 interviews and 2 discussion groups in Bastión Popular, and 15 interviews and 2 discussion groups in barrio Nigeria are analyzed. The results organized in analytical categories account for 1) the neighborhood landscapes, based on memories about the origins of both neighborhoods and the role of the residents in their initial constitution; 2) the cultural identities of its inhabitants and the elements that account for a territorialized perspective of identity; and 3) the identities of its residents and the contrast with an external other, which takes the form of other popular neighborhoods. We can conclude that the stories of these popular neighborhoods have had the collective action of their residents as a constitutive part of their development and maintenance, and in response, they account for those experiences that have shaped the cultural identities of their inhabitants. | Abstract (Spanish): | El presente trabajo constituye un esfuerzo para pensar en el rol del espacio barrial popular en la configuración de las identidades culturales de sus pobladores. Con este propósito adoptamos un diseño metodológico con enfoque cualitativo y un alcance descriptivo-comparativo, pues los datos que aquí se analizan corresponden a dos barrios populares de la ciudad de Guayaquil, Ecuador. Este artículo se desprende de una experiencia de investigación de dos años, y se analizan un total de 31 entrevistas y cuatro grupos de discusión en ambos barrios. Los resultados organizados en categorías analíticas dan cuenta de 1) los paisajes barriales, a partir de los recuerdos sobre los orígenes de ambos barrios y el rol de los pobladores en su constitución inicial; 2) las identidades culturales de sus pobladores y los elementos que dan cuenta de una perspectiva territorializada de la identidad; y 3) las identidades de sus pobladores y el contraste con un otro externo, que toma la forma de otros barrios populares. Podemos concluir que las historias de estos barrios populares han tenido la acción colectiva de sus residentes como parte constitutiva de su desarrollo y mantenimiento, y en respuesta, dan cuenta de aquellas experiencias que han configurado las identidades culturales de sus habitantes.
