| Abstract (English): | Until recently, a vast region extending north of the Escárcega-Chetumal highway, south of the Chenes region, and west of the Chactún area was archaeologically totally unexplored. With the aid of airborne laser scanning (lidar) data, acquired for a few portions of this part of the state of Campeche, we carried out surveys in the northern zone in 2023. Among the documented archaeological remains, a major center stands out, which we have named Ocomtún. Strategically located on a peninsula of elevated terrain surrounded by extensive wetlands, the site features several complexes of monumental architecture, stelae, altars, causeways, and some landscape modifications related to agriculture and water management. Pottery collected on the surface and in some test pits indicates occupation from the Preclassic to the Terminal Classic period. Both ceramic data and the epigraphic information contained in Monument 1 suggest that Ocomtún became a politically important regional center during the Late Classic, while the contexts associated with several reused monuments and architectural elements reflect the arrival of northern groups and political realignments in the Terminal Classic period. Various peculiarities of Ocomtún expand our knowledge of regional variations of Lowland Maya culture. Furthermore, the information obtained reveals the settlement's changing relations with surrounding regions and contributes to the understanding of processes towards the end of the Classic period, likewise attested in neighboring areas and probably related to the decline of the power of the Kaanu'l dynasty. | Abstract (Spanish): | Hasta hace poco, una vasta región que se extiende al norte de la carretera Escárcega-Chetumal, al sur de la región de los Chenes y al poniente del área de Chactún estaba arqueológicamente inexplorada. Con la ayuda de los datos de escaneo láser (lidar) aerotransportado, adquiridos para algunas zonas de esta parte del estado de Campeche, realizamos las prospecciones de la zona norte en 2023. Entre los vestigios arqueológicos documentados destaca un centro mayor que denominamos Ocomtún. Situado estratégicamente sobre una península de terreno elevado rodeada por extensos bajos, el sitio cuenta con varios complejos de arquitectura monumental, estelas, altares, calzadas y algunas modificaciones del paisaje relacionadas con la agricultura y el manejo del agua. La cerámica recolectada en superficie y en algunos pozos de sondeo indica ocupación desde el Preclásico Medio hasta el Clásico Terminal. Los datos cerámicos y los epigráficos contenidos en el Monumento 1 sugieren que Ocomtún llegó a ser un centro regional políticamente importante durante el Clásico Tardío, mientras que los contextos asociados a varios monumentos y elementos arquitectónicos reutilizados reflejan la llegada de grupos norteños y reestructuraciones políticas en el Clásico Terminal. Además de que diversas peculiaridades de Ocomtún amplían el conocimiento de las variaciones regionales de la cultura maya en las Tierras Bajas, la información recopilada revela las cambiantes relaciones del asentamiento con las regiones circundantes y contribuye a la comprensión de los procesos hacia finales del Clásico, atestiguados también en áreas vecinas y probablemente relacionados con el declive del poder de la dinastía Kaanu'l.
