This paper aims to provide an overview of some dilemmas posed in the last decades by the relationship between biotechnology and historical studies on indigenous communities, specifically in the field known as population genomics, based on the proposals developed within the Human Genome Diversity Project (hGdp). Today, as much as it was thirty years ago, when this Project started in the Morrison Institute at Stanford University under the guidance of Luca Cavalli-Sforza and his team, is important to highlight the social and ethical issues involved in genetic studies, which must necessarily recognize the indigenous people, their opinion, their authorization and their right to create and to maintain their own culture, their autonomy and their right to respect, dignity, and equality. El presente trabajo tiene el propósito de mostrar un panorama de los dilemas que ha representado, en las últimas décadas, la relación entre la biotecnología y los estudios históricos en torno a las comunidades indígenas, particularmente en un área de la investigación genética, que es la genómica de poblaciones, y a partir de las propuestas elaboradas en el marco del Proyecto sobre la Diversidad del Genoma Humano. Ahora, tanto como hace treinta años que comenzó dicho proyecto impulsado por Luca Cavalli-Sforza y sus colaboradores en el Instituto Morrison de la Universidad Stanford, es básico destacar los dilemas éticos y sociales involucrados en los estudios genéticos, que necesariamente deben considerar la opinión y el reconocimiento de los indígenas, su autorización y su derecho a crear y mantener su propia cultura, a la autonomía, al respeto, a la dignidad y a la igualdad.
