Abstract (English): In the search for new conceptual propositions that allow for an easier examination of the tumultuous global landscape we are witnessing, a sociological view of conflicts is advocated, one that allows us to recognize the internal causes that lead countries—and particularly powers— to abandon a rules-based world order. This points to the need for a change—or simply a rebalancing—of some of the conceptual parameters that have been used in the field of peace and conflict studies. One of these parameters means moving away from the frequently cited causes (leaders with enormous capacity for deception, purely economic objectives, etc.) and emphasizing the social character of wars. Without the social support that Putin has in the Russian Federation, it would have been impossible to sustain the invasion of Ukraine after the first fiasco of assaulting Kyiv. This essay examines the internal social causes that motivate powers like the United States, China, and the Russian Federation to engage in hegemonic competition by means outside of a rules-based world order. Abstract (Spanish): En la búsqueda de nuevas proposiciones conceptuales que posibiliten examinar más fácilmente el convulso panorama mundial que presenciamos, se propugna una visión sociológica de los conflictos que permita reconocer las causas internas que conducen a los países -y en particular a la potenciasa abandonar un orden mundial basado en reglas. Ello apunta a la necesidad de un cambio, o simplemente un reequilibrio, en algunos de los parámetros conceptuales que se han estado usando en el campo de los estudios de paz y conflictos. Uno de estos parámetros significa abandonar las causas que se utilizan con frecuencia (lideres con una enorme capacidad de engaño, objetivos puramente económicos, etc.) y enfatizar el carácter social de las guerras. Sin el apoyo social que posee Putin en la Federación Rusa hubiera sido imposible mantener la invasión a Ucrania, después del primer fiasco por asaltar Kiev. En este ensayo, se examinan las causas sociales internas que motivan a potencias como Estados Unidos, China y la Federación Rusa a emprender una competencia hegemónica por medios al margen de un orden mundial basado en reglas.
