| Abstract (English): | The article focuses on the transnational trajectory of the Chilean priest Joaquín Larraín Gandarillas, the first rector of the Catholic University of Chile and a key figure in 19th-century education and the Catholic Church. In 1851, Larraín traveled to the United States to oversee the education of young members of his family and was invited to participate as a theologian in the first plenary Catholic council held in Baltimore in 1852, despite being virtually unknown in that country. His presence at the council was arranged by the Bishop of Richmond, John McGill, and supported by the Archbishop of Baltimore, Francis Patrick Kenrick, reflecting the esteem he earned within the Jesuit community at Georgetown College, where he resided for several months. During his stay, Larraín received the honorary degree of Doctor of Divinity, in recognition of his work and ecclesiastical commitment. His experience demonstrates the influence and international connections of a Chilean clergyman within the 19th-century Catholic context. [Extracted from the article] |
