This article analyzes the Mea Culpa document publicly read by the Franciscans of the Province of "San Felipe de Jesús" in Maní, Yucatán, in April 2009. In the document, the Franciscans ask forgiveness from the Maya people for the symbolic offenses and violence committed against them from the sixteenth century to recent times. Based on an examination of the document, interviews with the authors and ceremony participants, in addition to various newspaper articles and specialized literature, this article situates this request within the contemporary magisterium of the Catholic Church, drawing on the guidelines of the Jubilee 2000 and the long-standing presence of the Friars Minor in the Yucatan Peninsula. The various conflicting reactions to the event --within the Order, among members of the Maya community, and among historians-- are discussed, as well as the debate surrounding its alleged anachronism, its theological legitimacy, and its symbolic scope. Finally, it is argued that the Mea Culpa constitutes a document of regional historical value for the Church, insofar as it represents an institutional exercise in remembrance and acknowledgment of guilt; however, its symbolic scope and restorative potential remain subjects of debate, depending on its social reception and the actions that accompany it. En el presente artículo se analiza el documento Mea Culpa, leído públicamente por los franciscanos de la provincia de San Felipe de Jesús, en Maní, Yucatán, en abril del 2009, por medio del cual solicitaron el perdón al pueblo maya por los agravios y violencias simbólicas cometidos hacia él en el pasado, desde el siglo xVi hasta tiempos recientes. A partir del examen del escrito, entrevistas con sus autores y participantes de la ceremonia, aunado a diversas fuentes hemerográficas y bibliografía especializada, en estas líneas se sitúa a dicha petición en el marco del magisterio contemporáneo de la Iglesia católica, basado en las directrices del Jubileo 2000 y en la larga presencia de los Hermanos Menores en la península de Yucatán. Además, se discuten las reacciones encontradas que ocasionó el acto, tanto dentro de la Orden, como entre miembros del pueblo maya, historiadores, así como su debate por su supuesto anacronismo, su legitimidad teológica y su alcance simbólico. Por último, se plantea que el Mea Culpa constituye un documento con valor histórico regional para la Iglesia, en tanto representa un ejercicio institucional de memoria y reconocimiento de culpa; no obstante, su alcance simbólico y su potencial restitutivo permanecen abiertos al debate, dependiendo de su recepción social y de las acciones que lo acompañen.
