Title: REEQUILIBRAR EL COMERCIO Y EL SISTEMA GLOBAL DEL DÓLAR. (Spanish).
Authors: ALI, MONA
Source: Anuario Internacional CIDOB. 2025, p32-40. 9p.
Subjects: BALANCE of trade, CHINA-United States relations, TARIFF, FOREIGN exchange reserves, INCOME inequality
Geographic Terms: CHINA, UNITED States
Abstract (English): The article analyzes the trade and financial imbalances between the United States and China, highlighting the record current account deficit of the U.S. in 2024 and China’s historic trade surplus. It examines how the policies of the Biden and Trump administrations have attempted to "rebalance trade" through tariffs and restrictions, linking these imbalances to factors such as income inequality and China’s economic model based on savings and low consumption. Additionally, it addresses the central role of the dollar as the international reserve currency and a global financial asset, pointing out the complexity and vulnerability of the dollar-based financial system, which includes lightly regulated markets such as currency swaps. Finally, it discusses the limited capacity of the euro to compete with the dollar due to Europe’s dependence on the U.S. financial system and military spending priorities that hinder the development of European monetary autonomy.
