Abstract (English): The article focuses on the geoeconomic and geopolitical competition for critical minerals, essential to addressing the climate crisis and advancing the fourth industrial revolution driven by artificial intelligence (AI). It highlights how China has consolidated its leadership through strategic investments and control of supply chains, while the United States has adopted protectionist and confrontational policies, especially under the Trump and Biden administrations. The rivalry between the two powers has generated trade tensions and a reconfiguration of globalization toward safer but more costly supply chains. Despite this competition, the European Union and China maintain commitments to decarbonization and digitalization, proposing environmental, social, and governance (ESG) criteria for fairer and more inclusive transitions, especially in developing countries. The text warns that the struggle for these resources and technologies could increase inequalities and hinder global solutions to the climate and technological crises. [Extracted from the article]
Abstract (Spanish): El artículo se centra en la competencia geoeconómica y geopolítica por los minerales críticos, esenciales para enfrentar la crisis climática y avanzar en la cuarta revolución industrial impulsada por la inteligencia artificial (IA). Destaca cómo China ha consolidado su liderazgo mediante inversiones estratégicas y control de cadenas de suministro, mientras Estados Unidos ha adoptado políticas proteccionistas y de confrontación, especialmente bajo las administraciones de Trump y Biden. La rivalidad entre ambas potencias ha generado tensiones comerciales y una reconfiguración de la globalización hacia cadenas de suministro más seguras pero costosas. A pesar de esta competencia, la Unión Europea y China mantienen compromisos con la descarbonización y digitalización, proponiendo criterios ambientales, sociales y de gobernanza (ASG) para transiciones más justas e inclusivas, especialmente en países en desarrollo.
