| Abstract (English): | The new Atlantic bourgeoisies, enriched in the colonial career, started their cursus honorum by emulating the nobiliary customs. To this end, the entailment of property through the institution of the entailed estate was an essential instrument. These foundations allow us to trace the socio-economic impact of colonial trade by analysing the profile of the founders and the assets linked by which the families represented their power and status. Given the social background of the founders and holders of entailed estates, not infrequently they were located on the other side of the Atlantic. In this sense, it was women who were in charge of the management of the family patrimony, either by their own right of succession, as widows or proxies of the possessor, or as guardians or curators of the heirs. This paper analyses the role played by women in the economic management of the entailed estates, paying special attention to their presence in the courts of justice. For this purpose, the study primarily relies on notarial and legal sources --such as judicial records, laws and porcones-- as well as letters. This analysis demonstrates how women played a central role in the management and defense of entailed estates on both sides of the Atlantic. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
| Abstract (Spanish): | Las nuevas burguesías atlánticas enriquecidas en la carrera colonial emprendían su cursus honorum mimetizando los usos nobiliarios. Para ello, la vinculación de bienes a través de la institución del mayorazgo fue una herramienta imprescindible. Estas fundaciones nos permiten rastrear el impacto socioeconómico del comercio colonial analizando el perfil de los fundadores y los bienes vinculados mediante los cuales las familias representaban su poder y estatus. Dada la extracción social de los fundadores y poseedores de mayorazgos, no en pocas ocasiones, estos se encontraban al otro lado del Atlántico. En este sentido, podía acontecer que las mujeres se encargaran de la gestión del patrimonio familiar, bien por su derecho sucesorio propio, como viudas o apoderadas del poseedor o como tutoras o curadoras de los herederos. En este trabajo se analiza el protagonismo de las mujeres en la gestión económica de los mayorazgos, dedicando especial atención a su presencia en los tribunales de justicia. Para ello se emplean fundamentalmente fuentes notariales y jurídicas --como expedientes judiciales, legislación, ejecutorias de pleitos y porcones--, así como misivas. Este análisis revela cómo las mujeres desempeñaron una función esencial en la defensa y gestión de los mayorazgos en las dos orillas del Atlántico. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
