Once the Spanish arrived in the New World, the transfer of population from one side of the ocean to the other became constant. The movement of settlers was key to effectively colonizing the territory and establishing a society in the colonies that followed the peninsular model. Women played a fundamental role in this process and were prominent in the entire migratory movement. Throughout the 17th century, a total of 10,021 women traveled to America. Among them were 5,520 single women and 528 widows, who were not subject to their husbands' decisions, despite the limitations imposed on them. What motivated these women to leave? Did they travel by choice, or were they forced by circumstances? Through various case studies, we will explore their motivations and the characteristics of their journeys. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |

Una vez que los españoles llegaron al Nuevo Mundo, el traslado de población entre uno y otro lado del Océano fue una constante. El desplazamiento de pobladores era clave para lograr una colonización efectiva del territorio e instaurar en las colonias una sociedad que siguiese el modelo peninsular; para ello un papel fundamental hubieron de asumir las mujeres, quiénes también gozaron de protagonismo en todo el proceso migratorio. A lo largo del siglo xvii se trasladaron a América un total de 10.021 mujeres, entre ellas, a pesar de las limitaciones que se les impusieron, viajaron 5.520 solteras y 528 viudas, es decir, mujeres no sujetas a los designios de sus maridos: ¿qué motivo les impulsó a partir? ¿viajaron por decisión propia u obligadas por las circunstancias? A través de distintos estudios de casos nos adentraremos en sus motivaciones y en las características de los viajes que realizaron. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
