Abstract: The article discusses the book "Abdala," by cuban writer José Martí. The article starts off by discussing the influence that Martí's teacher, Rafael María de Mendive, had over his pupil's formation and literary style. The book implies the paradox that exists between patriotism and the defense of the homeland, as well as the gender role and femininity that it engenders. The article continues by discussing the role of the wounded hero, highlighting the story of the wounded soldier dying in his mother's arms.
