Abstract: The article reports on a homily delivered by Pope Benedict XVI on May 24, 2009, in the Plaza Benedicto XVI in Cassino, Italy. The author cites Pope Benedict's reflections on the historical significance of Benedictine spirituality in the context of his visit to the Benedictine monastery at Montecassino, in Italy. Various aspects of the legacy of Saint Benedict are mentioned including the emphasis on work and prayer, the value given to human dignity and the impulse toward evangelism. The author also cites the role of the Benedictine order in the evangelization of Europe.
