Abstract: The article describes the founding of the Centro Internacional de Estudios Superiores de Comunicación para América Latina (CIESPAL), an institution in Quito, Ecuador dedicated to the study and teaching of communication and journalism in Latin America. The idea to establish CIESPAL was proposed at a 1959 United Nations conference with an initiative between the Ecuadorian government, UNESCO, and the Universidad Central del Ecuador. Some of the institutional goals established at CIESPAL's founding were to conduct professional journalism training programs, promote social development research, and create lasting relationships with similar institutions.
