Abstract (English): In two hundred years of independence, Chile has evolved from a rural society to a predominantly urban one, with high indices of schooling and cultural homogenization. However, as this essay shows, the appearance of new information technologies represents a serious obstacle to the spread and prevalence of reading and writing as a mechanism of formation of national identity.
