Description
Summary:Recombinant proteins represent a crucial group of molecules for the treatment of many complex diseases afflicting humanity. Their production method involves not only DNA manipulation but also the utilization of biological production systems, including bacterial, mammalian, or insect cells. Despite the several advantages offered by plant-based or suspension-cultured plant cell production systems, the penetration of recombinant plant proteins into the pharmaceutical market remains low. This review presents the fundamental aspects of protein production technology using plant expression platforms, with a focus on advancements achieved in the production of recombinant human Epidermal Growth Factor (rhEGF), a model protein with pharmaceutical and cosmetic applications.
