| Summary: | By extending previous work on sliding friction and contact mechanics, friction between metals in dry sliding contact following run-in is analyzed. A friction model which includes the effects of elastic/plastic deformation along with surface adhesion and entrapped wear debris plowing is proposed. The comparison with experimental results indicates that the model can give quantitative prediction of the coefficient of friction. The model can be used to analyze the separate effects on friction of nominal pressure, surface roughness, material hardness, surface adhesion and entrapped debris. |
