Summary: The SSN 637 Class nuclear submarine uses an AN/BQS-14 sonar for mine detection and ice avoidance. Different parameters of the sonar are recorded for playback at a later time. A narrative voice signal is recorded by using Single Side-Band Suppressed Carrier (SSBSC) modulation. Due to the recording tapes stretching and errors with the recording equipment, the demodulation process requires undesirable manual adjustment. This paper reviews two possible methods to demodulate the recordings. The mathematical derivation for Single Side-Band suppressed Carrier is presented. The mathematical derivation of the errors which are induced during demodulation if the correct carrier is not used is also presented. A method to demodulate the SSBSC signal is proposed and tested with the results presented.
