Abstract: This article focuses on glycollate formation and metabolism by algae. The presence of a functional glycollate pathway in algae is now well established. A major control point of this pathway appears to be glycollate dehydrogenase because in most algae this enzyme is repressed when cells are grown under conditions not favoring glycollate biosynthesis. Although phosphoglycollate phosphatase is also repressed when cells are grown under high carbon dioxide concentrations the multiple specificity of other phosphatases in the algal cell could mean that glycollate was still produced from phosphoglycollate.
