Abstract: The article profiles the Qatar Computing Research Institute computer science laboratory since its founding by the Qatar Foundation in 2010. Alleged difficulties in attraction and retention of researchers, interns, and graduate students are described, the mission and philosophy of the lab to advance the prominence of Arabic-language computer science research is outlined, and information is offered on the establishment of scientific advisory committees on topics including artificial intelligence, social computing, and Arabic language technologies.
