| Abstract: | In this article, a synthetic methodology is reported to prepare Polyethylenimine (PEI) polyampholytes, with predefined ratio of cationic and anionic functionalities, via the reaction of PEI with glutaric anhydride and succinic anhydride. To screen the best reaction condition between amine and anhydrides, initially model reactions between butylamine and glutaric anhydride are monitored using different conditions. Later, choosing the best reaction condition (as per model reactions) a series of PEI ampholytes are prepared by reacting PEI with both glutaric and succinic anhydride with an predefined degree of functionalization (defined experimentally via the feed ratio of the reagents used) such as 10%, 20% and 30% as analyzed by 1H NMR and IR spectroscopy. Due to electrostatic attraction of oppositely charged ions, the polyampholytes are insoluble in distilled water at pH ~ 6.5, however can form stable nano/micro particles (radius ~200 nm) at 0.8 N aqueous NaCl solution or higher salt concentration. The dye adsorption ability of the polyampholytes is studied in details revealing multilayered adsorption phenomenon (better fitted to Freundlich isotherm) and pseudo second order adsorption kinetics.
