| Abstract: |
This article discusses the principles behind trellis-coded modulation (TCM), which is an established method to combat the aforementioned impairments. TCM is one of the main components of the modern modulator-demodulator or modem systems for data transmission over telephone lines. Trellis diagrams or state transition diagrams were originally introduced in communications by researcher G.D. Forney to describe maximum likelihood sequence detection of convolutional codes. They were employed to soft decode convolutional codes using a dynamic programming algorithm also known as the Viterbi algorithm. |
