Owing to their superior mechanical properties, Al-Mg2Si composite materials are widely employed in the aerospace, electronic, and automotive industries, among other fields. The microstructures of the Al-10Mg2Si composite materials with various Y contents were analyzed via x-ray diffraction (XRD), 3CCD real-color confocal microscopy (3CCD), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Concurrently, the mechanical properties were assessed through hardness and tensile testing using a microhardness tester and a universal testing machine, respectively. The experimental results demonstrated that the addition of Y to the Al-Mg2Si alloy led to the formation of three distinct phases: α-Al, Mg2Si, and Al3Y. The primary growth of the Al-10Mg2Si alloy with Y inclusion led to a refinement of the α-Al structure and a modification of the eutectic Mg2Si structure. As the Y content increased, the strength and elongation of the Al-10Mg2Si alloy initially increased, followed by a decrease. The highest tensile strength and total elongation of the Al-10Mg2Si alloy with Y addition were 320 MPa and 6.2%, respectively. The addition of Y effectively refined the primary α-Al phases into a more circular shape, and the Al3Y phases served as heterogeneous nucleation sites. After modification, the fracture surface of the alloy changed from a large area of brittle fracture with complete cleavage planes and tearing edges to a ductile fracture with numerous tough dimples. Thus, this study presents a simple optimized method to enhance the modification efficiency of Y in hybrid Al-Mg2Si composites. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
