Abstract: High-speed with quality of transmission is the requirement for upcoming underwater acoustic (UWA) communication, which is fulfilled using multiple input multiple output orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM) system. But multi-access interference (MAI), due to co-channel users, degrades the capacity and quality of MIMO-OFDM-UWA communication system. Therefore, multi-user detection (MUD) is needed in MIMO-OFDM-UWA communication system. In this research, weighted sequential parallel interference cancellation (SPIC) technique is applied between 100 Hz and 100 kHz frequency region to achieve MUD in MIMO-OFDM-UWA communication system. The UWA communication system is modeled using Kraken Underwater Simulation System. From individual subcarriers, weighted SPIC technique suppresses the MAI with estimation and elimination and also suppresses the sea state noise resulting from waves due to wind which is dominant between 100 Hz and 100 kHz. Simulations show that the proposed technique gives better performance both in bit error rate and average signal to interference ratio analysis over conventional SPIC and MF detector by considering the wind speed at 3.32 m/sec and 5.92 m/sec with noise frequencies which are at 2000 Hz, 5000 Hz, and 8000 Hz in an UWA network.
