This article provides information on Inforonics Inc., a privately-held company with clients in the reference publishing and library communities. Back in the early 1960s, Inforonics founder Lawrence F. Buckland had the upstart idea of creating a company to wed the use of computers and photography to improve the storage of and access to information. He staked his fortune on the emerging role of computers as information retrieval tools without having formal computer training. One of lnforonics' first projects was a contract with the National Science Foundation to develop a recording system which would capture a database as a by-product of primary publication. Buckland is not wilting to say how much has been invested in his privately held company to date or give out sales figures. He does claim, however, that lnforonics has been showing a profit since its third year. |
